Root Down at Waldsee Restaurant
Freiburg

Not many people know about Freiburg's jazz heritage, but in the 70s and 80s one of the best European jazz labels, MBS, had its studio in the Black Forest on the outskirts of the city. The Waldsee restaurant, in an old house also in the forest, is owned by an enthusiast who used to invite jazz musicians to play in the back room - Sun Ra was late for his gig once because he was hugging trees in the back garden. A local DJ, Rainer Trüby, has been running a monthly night called Root Down for the past 10 years, which is hugely popular with Freiburg's large student population. You find yourself in the middle of the Black Forest on a Saturday night with 1,400 kids jumping around to Theo Parrish records. If you're not there for one of his nights, the restaurant serves really good traditional fills, and some of the best white wine in Germany.

In 1996 Jürgen Oschwald & Rainer Trüby formed the Root Down party series at a restaurant called Waldsee just outside Freiburg - Germany but already in the depths of the black forest (Wald) next to a lake (See). It takes place each and every last saturday of the month.
Djs that already have graced the decks at Root Down include Peter Kruder, Jazzanova, Dixon, Theo Parrish, DJ Die, Laurent Garnier, Fauna Flash / Trüby Trio, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Matty Heilbronn, Patrick Forge, Deejot Hausmarke, Peshay, Anthony Nicholson, DJ Yellow, 4 Hero, Richard Dorfmeister, Yen Sung, Rui Vargas, Jimbo, Claudio Coccolutto, Mad Mats and many more...
The musical rules are: if its good its good, it just has to have soul...

DON’T MISS IT, BE THERE !

The Waldsee is located near the international airport of Basel. The scheduled flight network includes 62 airports in around 30 different countries that are usually flown to directly at least once every day without having to change. There are a total of 20 daily flights to Paris, London and Berlin.
